1-Wire Network Troubleshooting for Discovery & Optima

Theory of Operation

The 1-wire network provides a secondary means for the system to receive hardware and status information from 1-wire capable components. Some components can be “reset” over the 1-wire network. Table 1 below provides a listing of all 1-wire capable components.

The PHPS2 module is the central hub of 1-wire communication. All 1-Wire communication paths ultimately connect at the PHPS2. The PHPS2 must be connected and powered on to permit any communication on the 1-Wire network. The PHPS2 is responsible for receiving 1-wire data from all the 1-wire devices and then converting this data to RS422 serial. This serial data is then forwarded from the PHPS2 to the Host PC through the Serial-to-USB converter box located in the rear of the GOC. The direction of information travel is reversed for any data the Host PC forwards to any 1-wire device on the network; that is, the Host PC forwards information to PHPS2, then PHPS2 forwards to 1-wire device.

Troubleshooting

In order to troubleshoot a problem on the 1-Wire Network, the PHPS must be powered on and connected to the Host PC through the USB-to-Serial Converter and Host PC applications software must be running.

  1. Use the 1-Wire Network Diagnostic shown below to test the components on the network.

  2. Select optional ‘Force 1-Wire Reset’ only when it is desired to force a component to reset due to unresponsiveness, etc.

    • Selecting ‘Force 1-Wire Reset’ adds 3 minutes to the test execution time and resets the following devices on the 1-Wire Network: DTX1 Exciter, DTX2 Exciter, CFB, SRI, GMC Board, SRPS, and PEM.

    • Select this only if necessary.

  3. Select optional ‘Display Extended 1-Wire Information’ only if components are reporting failures and it is desired to see details not normally displayed.

The four possible normal output listings are provided in latter sections of this document. See Table 2 below to determine correct output listing for existing hardware and selected diagnostic options. Any components not communicating are displayed in red font.

Use the Troubleshooting Matrix in Table 3 to diagnose a failing 1-Wire component.

note:

Remove PHPS2 and SRPS power before removing or connecting any cable.

After a power cycle, it is not necessary to perform a TPS Reset before executing 1-Wire Diagnostic. After the power cycle, some item sub-functions may report failure until next successful TPS Reset. The item can be detected and diagnosed with these sub-functions failing.

  1. If reported item is IRD Controller inside GOC (“DIFOCHDv”) then remove jumper cable and connect cables J4 and J5 to IRDC J4, J5.

  2. Locate input and output 1-Wire connections to item and reseat.

  3. If reported item is SRPS then reseat or replace SRPS Control Board.

  4. If reported item is eSRPS then replace.

  5. If reported item is Cronus then reseat or replace GMC Board.

  6. Replace any other single reported item.

Some items reported but multiple items not reported. See Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5 and Figure 6. The network is a serial configuration.
  1. Locate connection between PHPS and first reported item and reseat. Remove PHPS2 and SRPS power before reconnecting any cable.

  2. If system is 32ch, can swap entire cable between RRx1 J7 and RRx2 J7 and TDM J1 and J2. Remove PHPS2 and SRPS power before reconnecting any cable.

  3. Can bypass or remove DTX1, DTX2, Cronus, and PEM. Cannot bypass CFB.

  4. Replace item “Not Detected” that is ‘nearest’ to PHPS on 1-Wire network and cable connecting item to network.

All items not reported. See Figure 2 and Figure 3.
  1. Remove power from PHPS. At front of PHPS, remove cables at connections J8 and J10. At magnet room side of Pen Panel, remove cables at connections J35, J41, and J42.

  2. Restore PHPS power. Repeat 1-Wire test (TPS Reset not necessary) and confirm “PHPS BOARD ID Detected”. If OK skip to Step 9.

  3. If not detected, then remove PHPS power. Perform system shutdown. After shutdown, install Emergency Stop bypass jumper to J103 connector at top of PGR Cabinet. Remove cable at J40 on magnet room side of Pen Panel. Restart system and start applications boot.

  4. Repeat 1-Wire test and confirm “PHPS BOARD ID Detected”. If detected, then skip to Step 11.

  5. Remove PHPS2 power. Remove cables at rear of PHPS from J40, J41, J42, J43, and J35. Temporarily remove filter module at PHPS J35.

  6. Restore PHPS2 power and repeat 1-Wire test and confirm “PHPS BOARD ID Detected”.

  7. If detected then remove power from PHPS2. Install cables one at a time until bad cable identified and replaced. Remove PHPS2 power before reconnecting any cable. Proceed to Step 14.

  8. If not detected:

    1. Confirm DIP switches on USB-to-Serial converter in rear of GOC set SW1-ON, SW2-ON, SW3-OFF, SW4-OFF.

    2. Reseat USB connectors at PC and converter, sub-D connector at converter and FJ7, sub-D connector at J12 PHPS2.

    3. If necessary replace converter and PHPS2.

    4. Proceed to Step 14.

  9. Remove PHPS2 power and reconnect cable at PHPS J8. Restore PHPS2 power and perform 1-Wire test. If not detected, skip to Step 12.

  10. Remove PHPS2 power and reconnect cable at PHPS J10. Restore PHPS2 power and perform 1-Wire test. If not detected, skip to Step 13.

  11. Remove PHPS2 power. At magnet room side of Pen Panel, reconnect cables one at a time to J35, J40 (if removed), J41, and J42 until problem returns. See Illustration 3, 4 or 5. Remove PHPS2 power before reconnecting any cable. Open connection at the other end of the cable with problem. If the problem does not change, replace cable. If problem goes away, replace component that connects to cable. Proceed to Step 14.

  12. If problem returns when J8 is connected, remove PHPS2 power and disconnect other end at SRPS/eSRPS J6. Restore PHPS2 power. If problem remains unchanged, replace cable. If problem returns, remove SRPS power. Refer to Illustrations 3, 4 or 5 and continue removing cables, one at a time, at Pen Cabinet Panel Filter, ePDB or TDM. Repeat 1-Wire test until bad item identified. Remove SRPS power before connecting or disconnecting any component or cable. Proceed to Step 14.

  13. If problem returns when J10 is connected, disconnect other end at CFB J18. If problem remains unchanged, replace cable. If problem is gone, refer to Illustrations 1 – 2 and keep disconnecting items (CFB, DTX1, DTX2, Cronus, PEM) and cables and repeating 1-Wire test until problem returns. Proceed to Step 14.

  14. When finished, shutdown system, remove PHPS power, and remove E-Stop jumper from PGR J103. Rreconnect any loose cables. Restore power, boot software, and perform a Goodbye scan.
