HP Z400 Lower Level FRU Replacement

About this task

Overview

This procedure describes the steps to replace lower level FRUs in the HP Z400 host PC.

Workstation Service Preparation

Procedure

(For hard disk drive replacement) Please ask the customer to archive all images to an external storage device (for example PACS, DVDs, etc.).
(For hard disk drive replacement) Perform the Save Info procedure.
Close any PC applications, and power down the GOC.
Perform LOTO on the GOC and operator workspace. See the latest revision of the MR Service Safety Manual, PN 5452735, available from the online documentation library.
Remove the two screws on the left side panel of the GOC.

Notice

When removing the side panel, avoid straining the ground lead.
Remove the left side panel of the GOC by lifting it up.
Disconnect the short ground lead that connects the side panel to the GOC main chassis at the center of the lead.

CAUTION

Potential system board or component damage!

The cooling fan is off only when the workstation is turned off or the power cable is disconnected. The cooling fan is always on when the workstation is On or in Standby mode.

Disconnect the power cord from the power source before opening the workstation.

Remove all the cables connected to the computer, ensure they are properly labeled, and note their locations for reattachment.

Loosen the strap and remove the hook.

Remove the Z400 computer as follows:

Remove the two screws securing the back bracket.
Loosen the two screws on the back slide plate, and slide the plate backward.
Loosen the two screws on the side slide plate, and slide the plate in the direction of the arrow.

CAUTION

PERSONAL INJURY!

HOST COMPUTER CHASSIS CAN WEIGH IN EXCESS OF 40 POUNDS.

DEPENDING ON YOUR HEIGHT AND ACCESS TO EQUIPMENT FOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, LIFTING ASSISTANCE MAY BE REQUIRED. USE YOUR JUDGMENT TO DETERMINE IF LIFT ASSISTANCE OR A SECOND PERSON IS REQUIRED TO ASSIST IN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.

Carefully remove the computer using the back and bottom brackets from the GOC.

Notice

Potential component damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause permanent damage to electronic components.

Observe the following ESD precautions:

Work on a static-free mat.
Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge is discharged from your body to the ground.
Create a common ground for the equipment being worked on by connecting the static-free mat, static strap, and peripheral units to that piece of equipment.

Remove the two screws that secure the left side panel to the rear of the PC.

Remove the left side panel of the PC by pulling the latch out, and sliding the cover back. Set the cover aside in a safe location.

Replacing CMOS Battery

Procedure

Lay the workstation on its side with the system board facing up.
Locate the CMOS battery on the HP computer system board.

Remove the old CMOS battery. Release the CMOS battery from its holder by pulling back on the spring clip.

Let the computer sit for at least 3 minutes to allow the CMOS memory to clear.
Install the new battery. Make sure the spring clip snaps over the battery, holding it in place. The battery’s positive (+) side should be facing upward.
Continue to Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC and make sure to perform Step 3.

Replacing Graphics Card

Procedure

Lay the workstation on its side with the system board facing up.
To remove the defective graphics card:
1. Push down on the two green tabs to release the locking bar.

2. Gently push outward on the green plastic tab, lift the defective card straight up, and remove it from the unit.

Install the replacement graphics card into the open slot, and restore the locking bar.
Continue to Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC.

Replacing Memory Module

Procedure

Note:
The replacement memory must be the same as the memory that was installed. See the FRU manual for the correct part numbers. Memory modules must be replaced in pairs. Match memory module pairs by size and type.

Lay the workstation on its side with the system board facing up.
Gently push out and down on the socket levers on the slot that contains the faulty memory module.

Lift the memory module straight up, and remove it from the slot.

Notice

Memory modules and their sockets are keyed for proper installation. Be sure these guides line up before pushing down in the next step.
Place the new memory module into the open slot, and push it down until the socket levers latch it into place.
Ensure that the memory module is fully inserted and properly seated within the slot.
Proceed to Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC.

Replacing DVD Drive

Procedure

Notice

Avoid damaging the plastic tabs when removing the front cover from the PC. Read the next two steps carefully before proceeding.
Remove the front PC cover by gently unsnapping the plastic locks located on the right side, and gently pulling on the right side of the cover.

Note:
Ensure the cover is only pulled out far enough to disengage the locks and no further, or damage could occur to the left side tabs.

With the right side locks disengaged, push the cover slightly to the left while pulling out on the cover.

Set the cover aside in a safe location.
Notice

Never remove a cable by pulling on the wires. Use the housing connector instead.
Locate and unplug the connectors for the power and data cables connected in the back of the DVD drive.

Pull out on the plastic lock located on the left side of the PC, and carefully remove the DVD drive.

Install the new DVD drive by pulling out on the plastic lock while sliding the new drive into place in the open slot.
Reconnect the power and data cables to the new DVD drive. See Figure 16.
Reinstall the front PC cover.
Proceed to Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC.

Replacing Hard Disk Drive

About this task

The procedure for removing hard drives 0 or 1 is different than the procedure for removing hard drive 2.

Replacing Hard Disk Drive 0 or 1

Procedure

Remove the power and data cables from the hard disk drive.

Remove the defective hard disk by gently pulling out the plastic tab on the left side of the drive, and extracting the hard drive as shown.

Confirm that the data cable from all three devices are connected to the correct SAS device locations as shown in the illustration and table below.

Remove and retain the four guide screws from the disk drive.

Remove and retain the SAS HDD adapter from the hard drive.

Connect the SAS HDD adapter to the new disk drive.
Install the four guide screws on the new disk drive. See Figure 21.
Install the replacement hard drive by inserting the new disk drive into the slot where the original one was removed. (See Figure 19.)
Reconnect the power and data cables to the drives. (Refer to the table above.)
Perform disk wipe procedure. See the Disk Management Tool Service Manual, PN 5500610-1EN, available from the online documentation library.
Proceed to Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC.

Replacing hard drive 2

Procedure

Pull the two plastic tabs securing the front cover of the Z400 computer and gently remove the front cover.

Remove the black plastic cover from the inside of the Z400 computer.

Disconnect the power and data cables from the back of hard disk drive 2.

Gently pull the plastic clip securing hard disk drive 2, and push the drive bracket out of the front of the Z400 computer.

Note:
It is unnecessary to remove the black cover from the front of the drive bracket.
Squeeze the two plastic tabs securing the drive in the bracket, and push the drive out of the bracket.

Remove the green bracket adapter from the hard drive by gently bending it so that the pins on the adapter come out of the screw holes on the disk drive.

Remove and retain the SAS HDD adapter from the hard drive.

Connect the SAS HDD adapter to the new disk drive.
Attach the green bracket adapter to the new disk drive. See Figure 27.
Insert the new disk drive into the bracket.
Insert the drive bracket into the Z400 computer.
Reconnect the power and data cables for HDD2.
Reinstall the black plastic cover into the Z400 computer. See Figure 24.
Carefully reinstall the front cover onto the Z400 computer. Make sure the cover tabs align with their holes in the Z400 chassis. It is easier to install the front cover if you align the tabs on the cover with the chassis as shown in the following illustration.

Confirm that the data cable from all three devices are connected to the correct SAS device locations as shown in the illustration and table below.

Reinstalling Host Computer in GOC

Procedure

Replace the left side panel of the PC and secure it with the two screws removed earlier.
Return the Z400 host computer to the GOC and replace and secure all cables and covers.
(For CMOS battery replacement) Obtain the GE Equipment Maintenance sticker and write the date on the sticker and place the sticker on the GOC for future reference.

Note:
Place the sticker on either side of the GOC, where it can be easily viewed.

Powering On Operator Console

Procedure

Remove LOTO.
Power ON the GOC at the rear of the GOC and then power up the host PC.
IF THE CMOS BATTERY WAS REPLACED, press F10 as soon as the hp invent screen appears. Setup displays at the lower right of the screen. Perform the following steps:
1. At the language prompt, leave the setting on English or use the arrows to select the language. Press Enter to confirm.
2. Set the time and date. Use the Tab key to move the cursor and use the left and right arrow keys to change values.
3. At the File menu, use the down arrow to highlight Save Changes and Exit and press Enter.

Finalization

Procedure

Reboot and ensure that no memory BIOS errors appear during the boot process.
(For DVD drive replacement) Insert media into the new DVD drive, and verify proper operation of the drive.
(For hard disk drive replacement) Perform the applicable Loading Host System Software procedure to load software and applications onto the operating system.
Run a goodbye scan (check scan).
Verify that all customer functions are operational (auto voice, filming, network, archive).
Reinstall the console front and rear covers.
(For DV25 software or later) Computer hardware replacement may cause a change in the 16-character service license ID code. Renew any site license softkeys that were affected by the hardware replacement.
