Passwords rules

The customer may request specific passwords. If this is the case, obtain the passwords from the customer and move on to changing device passwords.

Table 1. Rules for OS passwords
RuleConfig key
Rule #1Should contain at least 1 lowercase alphabetic characterPWD_LOWERCASE_CHAR
Rule #2Should contain at least 1 special character (Only @ # % _ - )PWD_SPECIAL_CHAR
Rule #3Should contain at least 1 numeric characterPWD_NUMERIC_CHAR
Rule #4Should contain at least 1 uppercase alphabetic characterPWD_UPPERCASE_CHAR
Rule #5Should contain a minimum of 8 charactersPWD_MIN_LENGTH
Rule #6Should contain a maximum of 63 charactersPWD_MAX_LENGTH
Rule #7Should not repeat more than 5 consecutive characters
Rule #8Should not be a dictionary word
Rule #9Should not have been a password used within the last 5 passwords
Rule #10Cannot be a palindrome
Rule #11Must have at least 8 characters different from the last password
Note:

Each account on a single system should have a unique password. For example, the root and insite accounts should have different password values from each other. Using the same password for multiple accounts on a system will remove roll-based access and decrease the level of security on a system.

For productivity, the same password value for a single account can be used on multiple systems at a site or customer. For example, the "insite" user could have the same non-default password value on three different systems in a hospital. However, make sure not to use the same value over multiple sites or across a region, because that would essentially duplicate the original default value problem this service note attempts to resolve.

Table 2. Rules for EA3 passwords
