HP Host Computer Z840 Replacement
Prerequisites
Overview
This procedure shall be followed when replacing the NIO Host Computer (Z840).
1 Removal Procedure
Procedure
- Select one of the following methods to Power OFF the Operator
Console:
- If Applications are up, click on the Shut Down button and select Shutdown.
The Operator Console monitor will display a 'Power Down' message when it is acceptable to power OFF the Operator Console.
- If Applications are down, open a Unix Shell. Type: halt.
- If Applications are up, click on the Shut Down button and select Shutdown.
- Power OFF the console at the front panel switch.
- Apply LOTO. See Equipment Service - Lockout-Tagout-PPE procedure.
- Remove the front and top covers.

- Loosen two screw of the rear right cover, and open the rear
right cover.

- Disconnect the power cable and all cable connectors from the
host computer.

- Remove four screw that hold the host computer to the console chassis.
- Loosen the set nut, and loosen the lock screw.

caution- Slide the host computer out of the console.

- Remove “handles” from the host computer
2 Exchange NIC Card
Procedure
- Replace the NIC Card with one from the original host computer
according to NIO64 Host Computer (Z840) NIC Card Replacement. Then return to these instructions.note:
The System Option Licenses are tied to host computer’s Ethernet (eth0) MAC address. The NIC card can be exchanged if one is reasonably certain that the Host Computer failure is not related to the NIC card. This will allow for the reuse of System Option Licenses, otherwise new Licenses must be obtained.
3 GPU Card Installation
Procedure
- Remove the Recon GPU Card from the old host computer and install it to the new host computer according to Recon GPU Card Replacement.
4 Installation Procedure
Procedure
- Attach two handles to the new host computer.
- Slide the new host computer into the Operator Console from the front.
- Tighten the four screws to secure the host computer to the chassis
of console.note:
Torque each the for (4) 3mm socket cap mounting screws to:
- Tighten the lock screw to fix the host computer, and tighten the set nut.
- Re-Connect the power cable and all cable connectors. Refer to the Host Computer port label attached on the rear cover.
- Power ON the Operator Console at the console’s front panel switch.
- Verify that the host computer has powered up and is not displaying or sounding any errors.
- In order to assure proper operation of the host computer it is necessary to perform software Load from Cold (LFC).
- After completing the software LFC, make certain that you perform a final Save System State.
5 Finalization
Procedure
- After completing the LFC procedure, perform a complete shutdown of the Operator Console and restart the system.
- Reinstall the console covers.
