Equipment Service - FRU Parts Management

1 Damage/Unusual Conditions of FRU Parts

The proper management of FRU parts with regards to the conditions listed must be handled case by case with the support of your Field Service Leaders. Always consult with field leadership for instructions on how to proceed.

  • All packages containing Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) parts should be closely examined at time of delivery. If any packaging damage is apparent which may have affected the condition of the contents:

    • Consult with field leadership for instructions on how to proceed.

    • If necessary, refer to the "Damage In Transportation" document and order a replacement.

  • Damaged FRU parts cannot be repaired in the Field and installed on the Customer system. Under no circumstances should a field repair of the component be improvised or attempted.

  • If you suspect that the FRU part received has been tampered with do not install the part.

  • FRU parts are designed to match “Form/Fit/Function” of the original part. It is possible that a FRU replacement part may differ from the original part in appearance. If you are not sure that the part ordered is the correct replacement consult with Field leadership for instructions on how to proceed.

2 FRU Part Kits & Collectors

If a FRU part kit/collector is received that contains multiple parts and the instructions on how to assemble and properly install the parts cannot be located, consult with field leadership for instructions on how to proceed.

3 Fasteners

Fasteners are defined as those items such as bolts, nuts, washers, screws, threaded inserts, threaded standoffs, and any type of hardware used to secure components to the system/product.

Fasteners cannot be repaired in the Field. Always replace damaged or worn fasteners when found during the repair process. NEVER attempt to repair threaded inserts or components in the Field. When in doubt, replace the hardware with new parts. If necessary, consult with Field leadership on how to proceed.

4 Test Equipment & Tools

Under no circumstances may Service Personnel improvise or attempt to repair test equipment, fixtures, calibration devices or any other special tool used during the servicing of customer systems. If necessary, consult with Field leadership for instructions on how to proceed with getting a replacement device.

5 Replacing Parts Between Components

5.1 FRU/Spare part Management - HP Computer Models

Hard disk drives that contain product software cannot be exchanged between different computer models without completely reloading software on the hard disk drive.

5.2 FRU/Spare part management - Purchased Options and Accessories

Purchased Option FRU strategies are developed for each separate product. Replacement part management for Purchased Options and Accessories may differ between products. Consult the specific FRU Parts List, or Illustrated Parts List manuals for the product. If the FRU part is not listed for this product type, then the Purchased Option or Accessory item itself must be obtained through Sales, or as defined by the specific Customer Service Contract.
