Grease Main Bearing

1 Overview

Use Polyrex grease (1 oz. cartridge 2347076) to grease the bearings every 2,000,000 revolutions.

note:

This procedure is specific to this PM. Do not apply grease to the gantry bearing outside of the normal PM interval for any reason without first consulting MI&CT Engineering personnel.

  • Only use grease gun 46-297931P1. It delivers approximately 1cc of grease per pump. A new cartridge contains approximately 30cc of grease. This is enough grease for multiple PM intervals.

  • The gantry requires very little grease. Never apply more than 8 pumps of the grease gun handle at each PM interval.

  • Do not apply pressure to the spring-loaded handle at the bottom of the grease gun while adding grease to the gantry.

2 Procedures

  1. Remove the gantry right side cover.

Refer to Parts Replacement > Gantry > Enclosure > (Cover Removal Procedure).

  2. Turn off 120 VAC, Axial Drive and HVDC service switches.

  3. Remove the gantry left side and top covers, and slide out the rear cover.

  4. Remove the bore maintenance cover from the bore cover.

  5. Attach the long nozzle (5376242) to the grease gun. The long nozzle is shipped with system.

  6. The fitting location may be hidden by slip ring brackets. Rotate the gantry by hand to find the fittings.

    note:

    Additional Step

If the Grease Fitting is not located under the Bore Maintenance Cover, the main bearing is Rotek and the Grease Fitting is located inner side of the Bearing. Remove the Gantry Bore Cover according to Usage of the Support Tool for Gantry Bore Cover and locate the Grease Fitting.

  7. Make sure the grease gun contains a cartridge with grease in it. Prime the grease gun by pumping the grease gun handle until grease comes out of the end. Wipe off the excess grease.

  8. Apply the primed grease gun to the grease fitting and pump the handle ONLY 2 times.

  9. Remove the grease gun from the fitting.

  10. Rotate the gantry approximately 90 degrees to locate the next fitting.

  11. Repeat steps 8 - 10 until you have added 2 pumps of grease to each of the 4 gantry positions.

    note:

Do not exceed 8 pumps total at each PM interval.

  12. Record the current number of rotations with a permanent marker near the grease fitting.

  13. Indicate on the PM Report Form that grease was added to the main bearing.
